About this Bow Summit, Icefields Parkway Experience

Peyto Lake is fed by the Peyto Glacier, which leaks fine rock flour into the water all summer. As the lake fills with sediment, the colour shifts — pale milky blue in early summer, intense saturated turquoise by August. From the Bow Summit viewing platform, the lake takes on a distinct wolf-head silhouette, which is how it earned its famous nickname.

There's no road to the shore — and that's the point. The view that everyone takes home is from the Bow Summit viewing platform, a short walk uphill from the parking area at 2,135 metres elevation. We time our 205 km drive from Calgary to skip the group bus pile-ups in the middle of the day, arriving when the light is best.

Your guide also captures complimentary professional photographs at each scenic stop — frame-worthy memories of your private Peyto Lake experience, included at no extra cost.

What you will see: The Peyto Lake Bow Summit viewing platform, panoramic views of the lake and the Mistaya Valley beyond, the Icefields Parkway scenic drive (Highway 93), Bow Lake, Crowfoot Glacier viewpoint, and Hector Lake.

Upper Bow Summit Platform

The signature wolf-head shot — wide-angle composition, lake centered, mountains framing the back. Best from late July–September.

Photo Spot

Side Path Above the Platform

Climb 100 metres up the side trail for a higher angle — even more wolf-like silhouette with fewer people.

Photo Spot

Bow Lake from Highway

Complementary turquoise view — Crowfoot Glacier sitting above Bow Lake, only 20 minutes south on the Parkway.

Photo Spot

Crowfoot Glacier Pullout

Directly opposite the hanging glacier — telephoto lens compresses the ice into the rock face dramatically.

Seasonal Highlights

The Icefields Parkway offers different experiences by season. Here's what to expect when visiting Peyto Lake.

Spring

Late May–June

Lake transitioning from icy pale blue to vibrant turquoise. Parkway snow patches still visible at higher elevations.

Summer

July–August

Peak colour and accessibility. Long daylight, wildflowers along the trail to the viewpoint. Wolf shape most distinct.

Autumn

September

Larches turn gold along the parkway; clearer air; quieter viewpoint. Some of the best photography conditions.

Winter

October–April

Icefields Parkway remains open in winter but is more challenging — snow accumulates and the viewpoint walk requires traction aids. Lake freezes.

Frequently Asked Questions About Private Peyto Lake Tours

How far is Peyto Lake from Calgary via the Icefields Parkway?

Peyto Lake is 205 km northwest of Calgary via Lake Louise and the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93). The drive takes about 2 hours 30 minutes each way. We pick up at 7:00 AM to time the light perfectly at Bow Summit.

Why does Peyto Lake look like a wolf from above?

From the Bow Summit viewing platform, Peyto Lake's natural shape — with two narrow inlets and a wider body — resembles the head of a wolf with pointed ears. The effect is strongest from late July through early September when glacial meltwater has filled the lake to its maximum level.

Is the Peyto Lake viewpoint wheelchair accessible?

Yes — the fully renovated upper viewing platform at Bow Summit (reopened in 2022) is wheelchair accessible via a paved switchback path from the parking area. It's one of the best-engineered accessible viewpoints in Banff National Park.

Can you walk down to Peyto Lake from the viewpoint?

Technically there is a steep, unmarked, unmaintained trail that some experienced hikers attempt. We don't include this in standard tours due to safety concerns and Parks Canada's preference that the lakeshore stays undisturbed. The Bow Summit viewing platform is the official and safest experience.

What's the best time of day to visit Peyto Lake?

Late morning (10 AM–12 PM) typically has the best light hitting the lake surface. Our 7:00 AM Calgary departure puts us at Bow Summit right in this window. Group buses tend to arrive between 11 AM and 2 PM, so our timing helps you avoid the platform crowds.

Can I combine Peyto Lake with Bow Lake and Lake Louise on the same day?

Yes — most of our Peyto Lake tours naturally combine it with Bow Lake (20 minutes south on the Parkway) and Lake Louise (the southern anchor). They're all along the same Icefields Parkway route. It's a long but incredibly rewarding day of multiple turquoise lakes.

Is professional photography included in the tour?

Yes! Every private tour includes complimentary professional travel photography. Your guide captures high-quality photos at the most scenic viewpoints — Peyto Lake from Bow Summit, Bow Lake, and the Icefields Parkway viewpoints. Perfect for Instagram-worthy memories, included at no extra cost.
