Tucked just over the BC border 230 km from Calgary, Emerald Lake is the largest and most luminous lake in Yoho National Park. Its vivid green-tinted water sits in a cradle of forested peaks — quieter than Lake Louise, less restricted than Johnston Canyon, and only 46 km further west.
Where Lake Louise is world-famous for its vivid blue colour, Emerald Lake is — true to its name — a vivid green. The colour comes from suspended glacial sediment, but the surrounding amphitheater of forest and peaks makes the green here pop in a way no other Rockies lake matches. It's 230 km from Calgary, quieter than Lake Louise, with no parking restrictions or advance booking required.
Our Emerald Lake tour combines the lake itself with the best of Yoho National Park — the Natural Bridge over the Kicking Horse River, Takakkaw Falls (Canada's second-tallest waterfall at 373 metres, when accessible), and the historic Spiral Tunnels viewpoint. It's the off-the-beaten-track day for travellers who already know Banff and want to cross into British Columbia.
Your guide also captures complimentary professional photographs at each scenic stop — frame-worthy memories of your private Emerald Lake experience, included at no extra cost.
What you will see: Emerald Lake shoreline, Emerald Lake Lodge, the Natural Bridge over Kicking Horse River, Field BC village, Spiral Tunnels viewpoint, Wapta Falls (seasonal), and Takakkaw Falls (June–October).
Every stop on this tour is hand-picked for a reason — here's what makes the 230 km drive from Calgary worth it.
Brilliant green water set against the President Range — a 5.2 km loop trail circles the entire lake.
Historic Canadian Pacific Railway lodge from 1902 sitting directly on the shoreline with a restaurant open to the public.
Wooden canoes available from late May through September — paddle into the middle of that vivid green water.
Kicking Horse River carved a tunnel directly through a solid limestone wall — bizarre and beautiful geology.
Canada's second-tallest waterfall at 373m — accessible by side road from late June through October.
Engineering marvel where the CPR railway loops through the mountain on itself — watch trains do the figure-eight.
A typical day on this private Yoho experience. Times are flexible — your guide adjusts to weather, light, and your group's preferences.

Short walk to view the river-carved limestone tunnel — one of Yoho's most unusual geological features.
Park, photos at the canoe dock, walk the first kilometre of the lakeshore trail with the President Range reflected in green water.
Cilantro Cafe at the lodge is excellent; Truffle Pigs in Field BC is a local favourite with gourmet pub food.
60–90 minute paddle — the only way to truly experience the colour from the middle of the lake.
Watch a train wind through the historic figure-eight if your timing aligns — a feat of railway engineering.
Optional add-on — adds 30 minutes but worth it for the sheer scale of Canada's second-tallest waterfall.
Drop-off at your Calgary hotel or YYC airport after a 230 km return journey through the mountain passes.

The Natural Bridge is a stretch of the Kicking Horse River that, over thousands of years, has eroded a tunnel directly through a solid wall of limestone. The river now flows underneath the rock wall instead of over it. It's a 30-second walk from the parking lot and one of the most unusual geological features in the Canadian Rockies.

Takakkaw Falls is accessible from late June through mid-October, depending on snow conditions. The 13 km access road closes outside this window. At 373 metres, it's Canada's second-tallest waterfall and well worth the detour when open. We check road conditions and include it whenever possible.
