Steel catwalks bolted into limestone cliffs lead you over rushing turquoise water to thundering waterfalls and frozen blue pillars in winter. Johnston Canyon is the most accessible, most photogenic short hike in Banff — and it's the perfect half-day add-on to any private tour.
Johnston Canyon is a narrow limestone gorge carved over millennia by Johnston Creek as it tumbles down from the Bow Valley. The trail uses a network of suspended catwalks that hover just above the water — you walk over the creek, looking down into emerald plunge pools, with the cliff face arm's length away.
The hike is short and well-graded: 1.1 km to the Lower Falls, 2.7 km to the Upper Falls. In winter the falls freeze into towering blue ice pillars — an entirely different, otherworldly experience that requires ice cleats. We provide them.
Your guide also captures complimentary professional photographs at each scenic stop — cinematic memories of your private Rockies experience, included at no extra cost.
What you will see: Johnston Canyon catwalks, Lower Falls (with a small cave that lets you stand behind the waterfall), Upper Falls (a 30 metre cascade with viewing platform), turquoise plunge pools, mossy limestone walls, and in winter, frozen ice columns.
Every stop on this tour is hand-picked for a reason — here's what makes the experience worth the trip from Calgary.
A small natural tunnel lets you stand within arm's reach of the waterfall — expect to get a little misty.
A 30 metre vertical drop with both upper and lower viewing platforms — the bigger, more dramatic of the two.
The signature Johnston Canyon experience — steel walkways pinned into the canyon wall, water rushing directly beneath you.
From December through March the falls freeze into massive blue ice columns. Ice cleats and a guide make this safely accessible.
The shady, damp microclimate supports columbines, paintbrush, and rare orchids in July.
The walk in passes through hundred-year-old Engelmann spruce and Douglas fir.

Johnston Canyon sits just off Highway 1 between Banff and Castle Junction — a 185 km drive from Calgary that rewards preparation. The Pacifica's generous cargo space means you can stow hiking poles and winter ice cleats without crowding passengers, and the all-wheel-drive system handles the last few kilometres of forest road with ease.
With 6 passenger seats, USB charging at every position, onboard Wi-Fi, and a panoramic sunroof that frames the Bow Valley corridor, the Pacifica is built for full-day Canadian Rockies adventure. After the hike, recline the leather seats and enjoy the quiet cabin on the return to Calgary.
Your guide knows the timing, angles, and light at every viewpoint. Bring a real camera if you have one — but smartphones work beautifully here too.
Inside the small tunnel looking out at the falls — wide-angle lens, watch for spray on your glass.
About 600m in, the catwalk curves dramatically with the canyon wall — wide-angle composition.
Lower platform puts you eye-level with the base of the falls; upper deck gives the over-the-top view.
Frozen falls create blue ice formations — the most magical shot in winter.
Every season delivers a different version of this private tour experience. Here's what to expect by time of year.

Peak season, busiest. Lush green forest, full-flow waterfalls. Early starts beat the crowds.
Crisp air, lower water, clearer pools showing turquoise colour at its best. Quietest of the warm-weather seasons.
The famous Ice Walk — frozen falls, blue ice columns, snow on the catwalks. Cleats essential.
